IGSF, IPLAI AND MEDIA@MCGILL invite applications to participate in a three-day workshop, led by Dont Rhine of Ultra Red, entitled:
A three-session practice-based workshop on militant sound research open to all Montreal artists, students, social movement activists, political organizers, and popular educators
This workshop will take place at IPLAI on Feb 1, Feb 3, and Feb 5, 3-6pm. Participants must commit to attending all three sessions.
These workshops are free, but attendance is by application.
Dont Rhine, co-founder of the international sound art collective Ultra-red, will present a three-sessions workshop on militant sound inquiry. The workshop introduces participants to Ultra-red’s sound research practices and ideas developed in the context of political organizing and community-based education. For over twenty years Ultra-red has employed sound and listening literacies to investigate anti-racism, the struggles of migration, housing justice, and HIV/AIDS activism.
Drawing on their own experiences and investments, workshop participants will conduct sound walks; make site-specific audio recordings; practice analytical listening; generate new strategies for collective action; and collaborate on a culminating public event. Participants may have experience in political organizing, social movement activism, popular education, and/or they may have an interest in sound art practice. Collectives and political groups are welcomed. Individuals do not need to be an artist or a musician in order to apply. Given the cumulative nature of the workshop, participants must commit to attending all three sessions. Participants will need to have their own portable audio recording device.
Submit a 300-word description of your reasons for wishing to attend the workshop plus any relevant community-based work and/or artistic work. Please include full contact information.
Deadline for application is Jan 20, 2016. Notifications Jan. 22 Email application to: email@example.com
